In which country do you feel the most free: the USA or the UK?

My answer to In which country do you feel the most free: the USA or the UK?

Answer by Desmond Last:

When I was riding my Harley across the States I got lost in Oceanside California. I was on my way to San Diego. I saw a Police car in front of me. So I overtook him and flagged him down to pullover. He had a laugh about being pulled over and gave me directions.

In the U.K the Police are rude and aggressive. I was in Oxford when I watched a Homeless man being kicked by a Police Officer. It was not a kick intended to give pain more a kick to get him to move. I intervened on his behalf. My intervention was met with rude anger by the Police.

The reason for the story is that the U.K feels less free because you cannot escape officialdom and its excess. It is a very populated country and that means lots and lots and lots of regulations.

In the U.S I felt freer. Apart from one occasion my dealings with the authorities were easy. I do not think I ever met a ‘Jobs Worth’ in the U.S.

The U.K has a very high level of bureaucracy and its effects impinge on everybody's lives. No matter what you do in the U.K there is a rule for it and somebody to enforce it.

The U.K needs reform and that reform should include removing a whole tier of Government to reduce officialdom. It also needs an upper limit to the size of its population.

America has ‘elbow space’which adds to the feeling of freedom.
