How much does it cost to live on a boat?

My answer to How much does it cost to live on a boat?

Answer by Desmond Last:

It is too ambiguous a question to answer in lots of detail. I have listed the six types of living aboard a boat and provided a guide to cost.

  1. The freshwater liveaboard who will never cruise a river or lake. The boat is only in freshwater and the boat never moves.
  2. The freshwater liveaboard who will occasionally cruise a river or lake. The boat is only ever in freshwater.
  3. The saltwater harbour bay or estuary liveaboard who is permanently on a berth or a mooring and may very occasionally cruise the harbour.
  4. The saltwater harbour bay or estuary liveaboard who is permanently on a berth or a mooring and will cruise the harbour as much as possible.
  5. The Coastal cruiser who will sail his own country calling into its harbours,
  6. The world cruiser who will cross Oceans and sail in and out of Harbours.
  7. Each has its own cost. I have put them in cost order. ………………….All will require varying degrees of maintenance and berthing or mooring costs. All will require power and water. All will require insurance. Saltwater cruising and liveaboard is more expensive than freshwater. The Salt corrodes and the seawater will cause marine growth.
  8. However for all of them the Number One Golden Rule of all Rules is never buy a boat without an out of water survey by a Qualified Marine Surveyor, and make sure you can get Insurance before you buy the boat.
