What is the cheapest you can buy a sea worthy sail boat for?

My answer to What is the cheapest you can buy a sea worthy sail boat for?

Answer by Desmond Last:

As owner and boat broker of Sydney Boat Sales I sold boats from 25 feet up. My least expensive yachts were mooring minders.

A mooring minder is a yacht purchased to park on a mooring until you buy the boat of your choice. But even a mooring minder has to be able to stay afloat.

A $25 foot fiberglass yacht that you can sail will cost you somewhere between $7000 – $10,000.

But cheap can be very expensive when it comes to buying a yacht.

The following are my Golden Rules never to be ignored.

Do not buy without an out of water survey.

Make sure the rigging is checked. It could cost as much as between $750-£1500 to replace on a 25 footer.

Make sure it has an outboard and a dinghy. Make sure the outboard is pumping water and pulls under load.

Make sure the Yacht has sufficient anti-foul. Excessive marine growth will slow you down.

Make sure the Yacht has a solar panel a battery and a bilge pump.

Make sure you can get insurance.

Make sure you have navigation lights and safety equipment.

With careful buying a used 25 yacht under $10,000 will sell again for the same price as you purchased it for.
