What do you think of Owen Smith as a leadership candidate?

My answer to What do you think of Owen Smith as a leadership candidate?

Answer by Desmond Last:

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Corbyn the awakened Socialist, brings forth an oratory that the younger members of the Labour Party have never heard before.

Owen is honest, passionate and loyal to his cause. Unfortunately he is competing against a Messiah.

Corbyn is right. The Labour Party needs to anchor itself firmly in Reborn Labour. Not the mire of lost identity that it has created, as it sought to become a soft Tory option.

Ed Miliband who was so far right he almost slept with Cameron, and Tony Blair who invented spin as the truth, took Labour away from its roots.

But unfortunately Corbyns economic policy statements are no more workable than they were 30 years ago.

Both Corbyn and Owen compete with the history of the Labour Party not its future.

The Labour Party's economic policy of 1970 is not suitable for 2016. But saying that I have to admire Corbyn for sticking to his guns. A rarity in modern English politics.

I used to be in the Labour Party. I was once had my knuckles rapped by the Party. The Press reported me as saying Kinnock would never become Prime Minster. Which of course he did not. I know how transfixed the Labour Party can become with idealism rather than practicality.

Owen is Labour through and through. But he has picked a fight he cannot win.

Corbyn as the Messiah has his cult following. The problem Labour has it that it needs new ideas not the old ones from 30 years ago,

Owen will lose. But strange as it may seem, the invisible Prime Minster Theresa May, could end up giving Labour the Government if she does not produce a Plan A for Brexit.
